Photoshop Manipulation Tutorials: Cartoon Effect
Create a cartoon effect on your photos easily! This tutorial uses a plugin called Topaz Labs (Topaz clean 3) to easily convert and smoothen the image in a cartooned manner. You'll get a free trial license here. Let's get started!
Step 1
Import your image in Photoshop and
duplicate it by pressing ctrl + J or simply right click on the layer and
select duplicate layer.
Step 2
Select layer 1 (duplicate layer) and
head to the menu bar select Filter > Filter Gallery > Poster
Edges. Adjust the settings, preferably you'll need to increase the Edge
thickness and Posterization values.
Step 3
In this step, we'll use the Topaz
Labs plugin Topaz Clean 3 to cartoonize and smoothen our image. Go to
Filter > Topaz Labs > Topaz Clean 3. Select the FlatStyle Preset
at the left and increase strength and Threshold slider at the right.
Step 4
From the layers panel add an adjustment layer and select vibrance. Then add Hue/Saturation layer and lastly and a Gradient Map
Increase vibrance value:
Increase saturation value:
Choose violet > orange gradient map and change the blend mode to Soft Light:
Your image should look something like this:
Step 5
Now duplicate the original image (Background Layer) by pressing ctrl + J and place the new layer at the top of all layers.
Step 6
With the background copy selected go to Filter > Pixelate and Color Halftone. Adjust settings (refer image below) and click ok.
Step 7
Change the blend mode of the background copy layer to soft light and decrease opacity as you like.
Your final image should look like this:
